Project 1 – Relative Materiality

RELATIVE MATERIALITY
DUE: THURSDAY 31st JULY
ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING: 30%

PROJECT OUTLINE

TIMETABLE: 7 July – 31 July (4 Weeks)

DIGITAL DESIGN ISSUES: Materiality | Section | Integrity | Form through Lighting | Texture

DIGITAL DESIGN CHALLENGE: Form and Texture

PRECEDENTS: Gordon Matta-Clark | Damien Hirst | Patricia Piccinini| Sam Taylor-Wood | Jason Deamer

SOFTWARE: Photoshop | 3DSMax | Editstudio | Audacity

TECHNIQUES: 3D Box Modelling | Material Generation | Animated Mesh Displacement | Basic Lighting

OUTPUTS: 1500 frame animation in DV Pal and Quicktime, 25 frames/sec, 720 by 576px formats.
RESTRICTIONS: The model must sit in a completely white environment.

PREMISE: Materiality is an incredibly powerful medium to convey 3D form and space. It is through materiality and the simple manipulated mesh that 3D form and space are explored through this project. The designer can describe these complex forms through a restricted perspective utilizing creative lighting, materials and animation in order to convey depth and texture.

PROCEDURE

WEEK 1:

  • Research the precedents given above and choose a starting point to model from. Consider its potential for development both via materiality and structure.

  • Develop your own design intentions on how you will deal with the concept of process and texture in relation to your chosen object. Consider if original form the appropriate, how you will use animation to manipulate your form, aesthetic formation and the process of decay.

  • Complete tutorials found in reference section.

WEEK 2:

  • Develop materials through Photoshop and procedural textures in 3DSMax for a variety of “maps” channels through 3DSMax including, diffuse, bump, specular, displacement, reflection. You must master all aspects of material creation through 3DSMax in order to deform and re-shape your object.

  • Develop an understand of “skinning”- the process of UV mapping to differentiate between the mesh and texture.

  • Use displacement and texture informed modifiers in order to (de) form your skin through animation.

  • During this week you will concentrate on 3D form development.

WEEK 3:

  • During this week you will concentrate on material qualities and basic lighting to further describe your form and space. Start to render 720 by 576 resolution renders with DV Pal compression.
  • Continue developing and refining the mesh and textures together, consider the aesthetic relationships between the skin and structure. Also, how does the light and shadow affect your model?

WEEK 4:

  • Use this week for final refinement of materials and lighting. Tweak any timing of animation, and render your 1500 frames of animation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

• Experimentation, creativity and the expression of a clear design intent
• Formal and poetic quality of your design vocabulary
• Extent of effective transformation from concept to final design
• Expression of design intentions through animated form
• Expression of design intentions through materiality and texture
• Expression of design intentions through lighting
• Ability to utilize computing technology to produce an animated landscape
• Quality of craft and presentation of project work
