3D Computer Gaming
Computer Gaming is a new cultural space evolving from the histories of role-playing, gaming, literature, film and art. Gaming genres that employ 3D techniques are particularly good pushing the immersive qualities of these traditional fields. This course aims to not only cover the vernacular of computer gaming, but to examine experimental concepts and practices that go beyond the status quo. In particular, this course will focus on a production-based approach where students will build their own computer games using 3D tools for modelling, interactive animation and experiences that are immersive. Readings and in-class discussion will guide production, examining the new history of computer gaming and professional practice. Guests from the gaming industry will join the class for special-topic lectures and/or critique and discussion of student work. The trimester will consist of three sections: asset building and game art, navigation and user interaction, and group projects modelled after computer gaming industry practices.
