Last year Media Design student Kenny Smith won a competition to make a trailer for the 24Hour Movie Marathon. Subsequently he was also asked to create the 48 Hour Film competition promo.
Inspiration for the animation came from old juvenile delinquent films, especially Rumble Fish and the Warriors. The visual aesthetic is a combination of analog and digital distortion – everything you don’t want to happen when you are making a film in 48 hours.

John Lewis – Senior Lecturer
John is a leading researcher in the Computer Graphics industry. His lengthy career includes employment with Disney, Industrial Light and Magic and, most recently, with Weta Digital (which he will still keep active while also working here at VUW). Some of his achievements include patented programming methods and special effects used in such classics as Forrest Gump and The Matrix Reloaded. His substantial publication record includes renown organizations such as ACM, SIGGRAPH, IEEE and I3D. John’s innovative methods for integrating mathematics and programming has exciting connectivity with our programme’s experimental and cutting-edge approach for working with digital media.

Kah Chan – Lecturer
I’m sure most of you already know Kah, who has been an outstanding tutor and guest-lecturer over the past few years. But you may not know that Kah has recently completed his Masters Degree, which also happens to be the first one in the history of our young programme. His thesis ‘Understanding Empathy with Children’ deals with 3D character design through an iterative studio methodology, and was awarded an Honour of Distinction by his examiners. This same research also lead to a paper, which was one of the few (perhaps the only) Masters-level work to be presented at the highly prestigious DiGRA conference in London this past year. Kah has also been quite active as an entrepreneur in Wellington, working with the Grow Wellington business incubator in co-founding Kickstand Ltd.

The Media Design programme is very excited about the addition of these excellent colleagues and are eager to work with them in the forthcoming years. You will all have a chance to meet and work with them in your course of studies in the very near future.

Recent graduates Tom Revill and Jason Frost won scholarships to participate in the Experience@Singapore event sponsored by Contact Singapore.

Kairo – The Network, a multidisciplinary event combining music, dance, video and theatre, will premier at Le Phénix – Scène Nationale de Valenciennes in France on December 11th 2009. Produced by Art Zoyd, Kairo involves an international team of artists, including VUW’s School of Design Senior Lecturer Anne Niemetz, who serves as video director for the production.

Based on Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s novel, Kairo evolves around the topic of emotional isolation in our technological world and the impossibility of true communication despite the proliferation of mass communication tools, in particular the Internet. A collaboration of international practitioners, this production introduces new interpretations of multimedia opera, while exploring vital topics contemporaneous to our society.
